Community & Creative Work

Beyond
the Lab

Research is only one part of a life well lived. Here you'll find the books I've written and illustrated, the community I serve, and the creative work that shapes who I am — as much as any dissertation ever could.

St. John's Lutheran School — PALS Association President

As President of the PALS Association at St. John's Lutheran School in Moore, Oklahoma — where my son Robbie attends — I lead the parent-teacher organization in coordinating fundraising, community events, school enrichment programs, and family engagement initiatives. PALS is at the heart of what makes SJLS a community, and I am deeply invested in its mission and its students.

My work with PALS has included securing Oklahoma City Community Foundation grants for campus improvements — including the Garden of Wonder outdoor classroom, landscaping, and drainage infrastructure — coordinating Scholastic Book Fairs, school auctions, and community outreach, building a school clothing closet, and developing direct outreach campaigns for enrollment growth. Additional highlights include producing the school's first Back to School Bash (August 2025), organizing a Working Dogs & Dog Safety event on National Dog Day tied to a Moore Animal Shelter donation drive, coordinating Talk Like a Pirate Day with Mathnasium for 48 students, dressing as the Lorax to read The Lorax to K–3rd graders for Dr. Seuss's Birthday Book-a-thon, and running the Spring Auction — raising nearly $900 for the school.

SJLS STEM Day — Founder & Lead Coordinator

Founded and led STEM Day at St. John's Lutheran School for two consecutive years, bringing together military and government STEM professionals, university researchers, community exhibitors, and local business sponsors to give students hands-on experiences in science, technology, engineering, and math — all framed within the school's Christian mission.

STEM Day 2025 — "Exploring God's Wonder" (April 8, 2025) featured robotics and coding stations with the University of Oklahoma Robotics Team, hands-on science experiments, a STEM Gallery, a Sam Noble Museum Discovery Kit exhibit, and a special appearance by the Chick-fil-A Cow. Guests included military and government representatives from the Air Force Engineering Directorate, the FAA, and Tinker AFB's AI/ML team. Sponsored by the Hogue Family, Air & Space STEM Outreach, the Skeletons Museum of Osteology, Science Museum Oklahoma, and others.

STEM Day 2026 — "Created to Create" (April 7, 2026) expanded the event with an Innovation Wall, Oklahoma Women in Technology participation, Mad Science OKC's STEM Day Finale, and representations from OU, the Oklahoma Biological Survey, and the Air Force. Moore Police Department joined as a community partner, and the event again featured the Chick-fil-A Cow alongside sponsors including Black Rifle Coffee Company, Raising Cane's, and Nothing Bundt Cakes.
